Born into an environment that failed to understand or embrace sexual diversity, Derek carried the weight of living in silence during his early formative years. When he made the momentous decision to come out, he faced severe backlash and rejection from those who were supposed to provide unconditional love.
Rather than letting rejection harden his heart, Derek chose to expand it. He forged a vibrant community of chosen family, worked tirelessly to establish personal independence, and became an outspoken ally and mentor for LGBTQ+ youth navigating their own difficult journeys.
Outside of his community leadership, Derek is known for his contagious laughter, his love for cooking big family-style dinners for his friends, and his passion for hiking the trails of the Pacific Northwest.
